The Software Is Genuinely Good

ZenBusiness has built the most polished consumer product in this category, and this page would lose its footing in the first minute if it tried to argue otherwise. Formation records, deadline tracking, and incoming agent mail all sit behind a single login, and the whole thing reads clearly to somebody who has never filed anything with a state before. If you want a console for the entire company, that console exists and ZenBusiness sells it. There is no console here. There is one North Carolina seat, handled properly, and the invoice stops at that.

Two Numbers, Twelve Months Apart

Bought on its own, without a formation package wrapped around it, ZenBusiness registered agent coverage costs $99 plus state fees for the opening term. Renewal is $199, and $199 is what year three, year four, and year nine cost too. Both figures are published and neither one is a trap. The trouble is arithmetic rather than honesty: buyers set that $99 beside everybody else's permanent rate, and $99 is not a permanent rate.

North Carolina leaves the recurrence nowhere to hide. Moving the appointment requires a filing of its own under N.C.G.S. § 55D-31, which tells you something structural about how the state thinks: that line on your record is meant to stay occupied, and you vacate it by filing paperwork rather than by walking away. An occupied line is a billed line for as long as the company draws breath. Budget against the figure that repeats.

Across five years the spread comes to four hundred dollars, spent on a duty the state describes the same way no matter who performs it.

One Number, Repeated

Our plan carries a single price. $99 covers twelve months. The renewal notice says $99 as well, since there is no upper tier to graduate into. What sits inside that number: a process server who reaches our North Carolina office hands over papers we scan and upload before that day's close, with an email flagging the moment it posts; the registered office line on your public record carries our street address in place of your residential one; and a reminder finds you well ahead of the April 15 report deadline. Exactly one optional charge exists in the account. Fifteen dollars scans a single piece of ordinary, non-legal mail, and you are learning that now rather than in month seven.

One superlative stays off this page. BetterLegal publishes $90 a year, a lower sticker than ours by nine dollars, and a page whose entire argument is pricing candor does not get to skip past that. What holds up: $99 sits in the cheapest bracket of flat yearly pricing quoted for North Carolina, and it is one of a handful that will still read $99 when year six arrives.

Filing ZenBusiness Out of the North Carolina Agent Seat

One document handles the whole thing. Form BE-06 is North Carolina's statement of change for a registered office and a registered agent, covering a new address, a new agent, or both at the same time. It goes to the Business Registration Division at the Department of the Secretary of State with a $5 payment attached. Because this state keeps its agent rules in one shared chapter instead of burying them inside each entity's own statute, that single numbered form serves LLCs, corporations, nonprofits, and partnerships alike. No entity-specific variant to go hunting for.

Two eligibility rules decide who you may name. Your replacement has to be either a person who genuinely lives in North Carolina or an authorized business entity that runs its own office out of the very address it lists as the registered office. And that address must be a real street location. A post office box can ride along as additional mailing detail; it cannot stand in as the registered office itself.

Sequence outranks speed here, and it travels in one direction only. The form asks who is taking over, so the replacement has to be under contract before the paperwork can be completed at all. Engage the incoming agent, submit BE-06, wait for the update to surface on your entity record, and cancel with ZenBusiness only once it has. Do those steps backwards and your public record still names somebody you have stopped paying, which is precisely the condition North Carolina's continuous requirement was written to prevent. A word on timing. No deadline in the state calendar pushes you toward this filing, and that is exactly why it sits undone for years. The $199 gives no warning either. It simply posts. Best handled in the billing cycle ahead of your ZenBusiness anniversary, not the one behind it.
