One disclosure, then the argument. NC Registered Agent.org owns this page, and the thing we are steering you toward is our own North Carolina agent service at $99 a year. Discount the praise and the criticism accordingly. The Rocket Lawyer pricing quoted below is that company's own, recorded during a July 2026 check and left exactly as published.

Credit Where It Is Owed

The rate is $125 a year for the agent appointment, and it stays $125 no matter which membership tier you occupy. There is no introductory rate that quietly steps up, no discount that expires on an anniversary you forgot. In an industry that leans hard on first-year pricing, consistency like that is worth naming out loud.

The platform itself is also real. Document templates, e-signature, attorney consultations, and a library of business forms are all in there, and a company that genuinely uses those tools every month is getting value that a bare agent service cannot match. If you are the kind of owner who drafts contracts monthly, the membership probably pays for itself.

What You Are Buying, Though

The agent appointment ships inside that platform. You are buying a legal-services subscription that happens to include somebody standing at a North Carolina address, rather than buying the address on its own. For an owner who signed up for the documents, that is fine. For an owner whose only actual requirement is a lawful place to receive a summons, a meaningful share of the $125 is renting a law library that never gets opened.

That is a scope question, not an integrity question, and it is worth answering deliberately. Look at your last twelve months. Count the documents you generated on the platform and the attorney calls you booked. If the honest number is zero or close to it, you are paying a subscription price for a filing-cabinet function.

What North Carolina Actually Requires

The state's demand is narrow and physical. Your registered office has to be a real street address inside North Carolina, and it has to be attended during ordinary business hours. A post office box is permitted only as an extra mailing address alongside the street location; it can never be the registered office by itself. The individual or entity you name must either live here or, if it is a company, run its own office out of that same street location.

Notice what is absent from that list. No document library. No legal advice. No software. North Carolina wants a door that opens between nine and five and a human being behind it who signs for what arrives. That is the whole specification, and it costs what it costs regardless of how many other products are stapled to it.

Why the Door Matters More Than the Library

Here is the North Carolina consequence that gives the address its weight. Miss the April 15 annual report and no late fee is charged, because the statute does not impose one. What happens instead is quieter. A letter arrives stating grounds for administrative dissolution, and sixty days from that mailing, ยง 57D-6-06 permits the state to dissolve the company. The only warning you get is an envelope, delivered to whoever holds your registered office. An agent who scans that envelope the day it lands is doing the single most valuable thing an agent can do. Our page on service of process covers how we handle the legal mail specifically.

The $99 Version

One line item, $99, renewing at $99 with no tier waiting above it. Included: whatever a process server leaves with us gets scanned the same day and uploaded, with an alert by email; our North Carolina street address occupies the public filings where yours would sit; and reminders arrive keyed to the April 15 deadline. The single extra charge in the whole account is $15 to scan a piece of routine, non-legal mail, and that is the end of the price list.

We will not call ourselves the cheapest in the state. BetterLegal publishes $90 a year and that is a lower number than ours. The defensible claim is narrower: $99 sits low on the published range for North Carolina, and it does not change shape after you sign.

Unbundling the Agent From Rocket Lawyer in North Carolina

The state filing is Form BE-06, which puts a different registered agent onto your record, a different registered office, or both at the same time. It goes to North Carolina's business registration office with a $5 fee, and because the agent rules live in one chapter that applies to every entity type, the same numbered form works for an LLC, a corporation, a nonprofit, or a partnership.

Fill in the entity name, the incoming agent, and the new registered office street address, remembering that a box number cannot occupy that field. Submit it, then watch the entity record until the change is visible.

Then, and only then, cancel the membership. This trips people up because the two systems feel connected and are not. Ending a Rocket Lawyer subscription changes what you are billed; it changes nothing at all in Raleigh. Until BE-06 posts, the state still routes your lawsuits and your dissolution notices to the agent named on the record. Appoint the successor, file, confirm, cancel, in that order, and the seat is never empty for a day. The change of agent guide covers the paperwork end to end.
